For The Love of Your Health: New Year Self-Improvement Tips

New Years Resolutions…making promises to ourselves that often times we do not keep.  For the love of your health and a healthy dose of self-confidence, take a look at these self-improvement tips and make 2018 the year you remain true to yourself and your convictions.  I compiled my thoughts for this blog when NBC Boston producer Pam Tomlin asked me to appear on their New Years Eve segment on ways to improve yourself for the New Year. (It will air on Sunday, Dec. 31 at 9:30am on NBC Boston’s This is New England program, as well as at 11:30am on NECN).  I have appeared on NBC Boston several times as their Teen Empowerment Adviser.

These tips are my personal thoughts and actual steps I have taken to become confident, healthy and happy:

Unplug from your smart phone – Social media is distracting and time consuming not to mention potentially depressing.  Be unreachable – set time aside each day to put your phone down (most important times are when you are with your loved at dinnertime, or downtime.)  And set the example for your kids – they will respect your demands that they do it if they see you are, too.

Negative Effects of Social Media:  Forbes Magazine – http://bit.ly/2zDVFIt

  • It triggers more sadness, less well-being
  • Comparing our lives with others is mentally unhealthy
  • It can lead to jealousy—and a vicious cycle
  • We get caught in the delusion of thinking it will help
  • More friends on social doesn’t mean you’re more social

Seek the Truth (about yourself)  Self-assessment, no matter how sobering it may be, is healthy.  Set three goals everyday (no matter how small) and accomplish them – http://bit.ly/2CchiVF (Assessing Yourself, Honestly)

Be Charitable –  And I am not suggesting that you write a check out to a charity or go to a charity event to bid on silent auction items.  Do it more than once a year and find a cause that speaks to you and show up!   Clinical studies show that giving to others and being charitable helps with:

Lowering blood pressure

Increased self-esteem

Less depression

Lower stress levels

Longer life

Greater happiness

So here are some ways you can Volunteer YOURSELF, feel good about helping others and in turn, feel good about yourself:

Body Confidence – this is not just a moment, it’s a movement and applies to men and women.  Be proactive in taking care of your body from the inside out – http://bit.ly/2BITQMs (6 ways to Boost Your Body Confidence)

Actions speak louder than clicking the “like” button or posting an inspirational quote. If you really feel strongly that your life needs a positive change and you really want the New Year to bring new perspective and new meaning then stop talking about it, stop regretting that you didn’t do it, stop wishing you “had the time” to do it….AND JUST DO IT!! – http://tcat.tc/2Cgj7AY (9 Effective Practices That Will Drive You To Take Action Immediately)

May 2018 be happy, healthy and productive!!

All the best to you and yours,

Maria
