Dress For Success: Why Dressing Up Makes Us Feel Good

“Hi! My name is Cassandra Tedeschi. When I came to Fearless Focus Program as a teenager, I was in a dark place looking for a light. I was going through the demons of high functioning anxiety and depression. I couldn’t see a future for myself but that smile on Maria’s face every time I came to class became that daily light.

Maria made me realize that dressing up and feeling your best self is so important and a vital form of self care. I became this outgoing girl who would strut into freshman English class with confidence in high heels and any time classmates commented as to why I was wearing five inch Michael Kors Mary Janes with jeans and a blazer, I would shrug it off “because I feel like it.”

Maria pushed me further along and taught me the tools needed to build my self- esteem and have self-confidence. It was that empowerment that made me want to go into fashion. I also met a lifelong friend along the way in the program.

Fast forward to now, I work in luxury retail in Manhattan as an assistant manager. I just came back from personal leave due to the anxiety of the job during this trying time. I now realize that I had not been getting the daily dose of endorphins that exercise and dressing up for work provides me. I needed time to step back to realize that was what was missing.

If the pandemic has taught me anything it is important to place your mental health and well being first. You are bigger than what makes you anxious. The most important relationship is the one you have with yourself. Be kind to yourself, smile, there’s more to your story!”
