Online Bullying – Caroline’s Story

Online Bullying

Caroline’s Experience with Online Bullying……Social media is the most influential service of our generation, and of all time. We must remember that social media involves serious risks for individuals, communities, and society as a whole. If you have an Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, or TikTok, you most likely have experienced some degree of cyberbullying. I’ve been a victim of it since I downloaded the Instagram app back in 2013. I could share with you numerous accounts of harassment, impersonation, shaming, leaked personal information, the spread of rumors, anonymous accounts with the main purpose of bullying, etc. You name it and I’ve experienced it in one way or another. I want to share a screenshot of an account made by someone in my high school (my mom only took a screenshot of one post but there were at least 3 just about me). The reason behind me sharing this is to remind all of you who have experienced bullying on social media that it is all motivated by insecurities and a desperate need for attention.

Seriously, I want you to think about it… if I am happy and confident with my own life, why would I waste my time and energy creating an Instagram account, distorting a selfie of one of my peers, thinking of a negative comment, and then posting it! My response has always been to ignore it. I know it’s hard, especially with others entertaining it and the social media culture today. But seriously, the best advice I have is for you to let these people know that they wasted their time trying to bring you down. Remind them that you are too busy working on the amazing life you are creating for yourself, to acknowledge their negativity. This mindset is a different level of maturity that most cyberbullies will never achieve. But I encourage all of you to give it a try, it doesn’t matter if you are a mom on Facebook or a teenager on Instagram.

In 2015 I was only a freshman in high school, dealing with the loss of my dad, and I had absolutely nothing figured out. But instead of entertaining these online trolls and cyberbullies, I focused on making friends, doing well in school, dominating in sports, basically just doing things that made me happy. Today in 2021, I am in my junior year at my dream school, studying abroad in Barcelona with my amazing friends and boyfriend, making new friends & traveling all over Europe, happily living this life I created for myself. And I know for a fact, the person who created that account back in 2015 is watching 😉.– xo Caroline
